Arif Alvi sworn in as 13th President of Pakistan

Islamabad: Dr. Arif Alvi, a founder of Tehreek-e-Insaf party, sworn in as Pakistan’s 13th President at a ceremony held at the Aiwan-e-Sadr (the President House) here on Sunday.

Arif Alvi was administered the oath by Chief Justice Saqib Nisar. Top civil-military brass, Prime Minister Imran Khan, Army Chief Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa and foreign diplomats were present.

In 1969, Alvi was active in the student movement during Field Marshal Ayub Khan’s military regime. He was shot during a protest in Lahore.

He was a Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) candidate for the provincial assembly but the elections did not take place in 1979. Alvi is one of the founding members of Tehreek-e-Insaf party. He served as secretary general from 2006 to 2013.

He won the National Assembly elections from NA-247 (Karachi) during the July 25 polls. He was also elected member of the National Assembly in the 2013 general election.
