Kolkata: At least one person died and many others sustained critical injuries after a large section of a bridge in South Kolkata’s Majerhat collapsed today following incessant rainfall.
According to reports, several people are feared to be trapped. The bridge is one of the busiest flyovers of the city, which collapsed over the rail tracks in the Alipore area.
Many vehicles were crushed as the bridge came down like an apocalyptic scene, trapping several commuters under it.
Fire brigade, police and NDRF personnel are carrying out the rescue work. The state disaster team has reached the spot and locals are also assisting in rescue operations and are trying to free people from the flyover debris.
The rescue team has so far rescued 25 persons. Around nine injured persons were admitted to the hospital.
West Bengal chief minister, Mamata Banerjee, who is currently in Darjeeling, said that she has ordered a probe into the bridge collapse incident. “Providing relief to the injured is the priority,” she added.
Notably, the mishap happened two years after the collapse of the under-construction Vivekanand flyover in Kolkata.
