Lawyers-cops spat

Cuttack: The fight between lawyers and police personnel over the alleged assault of an advocate landed in the Orissa High Court with the filing of two petitions in the connection on Thursday.

While Cuttack bar association president Umakanta Nanda and secretary Naresh Chandra Jena filed a petition in this regard, Nationalist Lawyers Forum convener Sabyasachi Mohapatra filed another petition.

In both cases, the petitioners demanded a probe into the matter by a retired or a sitting HC judge, disciplinary action against the accused policeman and compensation for the injured lawyer.

Acting on the petitions, a bench of Chief Justice Kalpesh Satyendra Jhaveri and Justice Krushna Ram Mohapatra issued notices to the home secretary, Cuttack-Bhubaneswar police commissioner, Cuttack DCP, traffic ACP, Chauliaganj police station inspector-in-charge. The bench asked all the parties to respond. The bench has posted the hearing to Monday.

On the other hand, although Cuttack deputy commissioner of police (DCP) Akhileswar Singh suspended two constables and a havildar in connection with the attack on a lawyer by Chauliaganj police, the lawyers continued their strike. The lawyers threatened to continue their strike till Monday.

DCP Singh informed the media that Constables Dilip Kumar Samal and Uday Kumar Bhuyan and Havildar Prasanna Kumar Behera have been placed under suspension for police excesses.

Besides, departmental action has been initiated against and a one-month notice has been served to Home Guard Kishore Samal seeking his explanation, Singh said, adding that four cases (215/18, 216/18, 217/18 & 218/18) have been registered in this connection.
