Mumbai: In a tragic incident, at least ten newborn children lost their lives after a fire broke out at a hospital in Bhandara in Mumbai.
The incident occurred at 2am today at Sick Newborn Care Unit (SNCU) of Bhandara District General Hospital.
Seven other infants who were admitted in the unit were however rescued.
The hospital nurse first noticed the smoke coming from the neonatal section and informed the authorities. Fire brigade was also called to the hospital immediately which rescued seven babies who have been shifted to other ward.
The cause of the fire was not known immediately but the hospital administration said an electrical short circuit could be the possible reason.
The 17 infants, admitted to the ward, were aged between one and three months.
The hospital has informed parents of the deceased children about the tragedy and the seven newborn babies rescued in the blaze have been shifted to another ward.
Patients from the ICU ward, dialysis wing and labour ward (a room in a hospital set aside for childbirth) were also shifted to other wards for safety.
