Bhubaneswar: Three more children died out of Japanese Encephalitis (JE) in Malkangiri on Saturday taking the death toll to 61. Initially, two year old girl Gayatri and four year old Sujit succumbed to the virus while later in the evening another girl died.
While 194 children were admitted to the district headquarters hospital for treatment of the virus, 128 have been discharged so far, said district health authorities. As of now seven children are under treatment and two under ICU at the district headquarter hospital.
Meanwhile, the central fact finding team is investigating details of the spread, treatment and awareness of the virus. The team is also studying the status of hygiene and pig farming in the region. The team has stated that malnutrition has reduced the children’s immunity owing which more deaths are occurring. The team said 63 percent girls and 95 percent tribal children have died so far.
