Bhubaneswar: Three days after the fire outbreak in Sum Hospital that killed 21, the owner of the hospital Manoj Nayak was arrested today in the wee hours at 3.30 am after he surrendered at Khandagiri police station. Earlier, four employees of the hospital were arrested based on an FIR by the Fire Services department.
On Wednesday pressure mounted on state government to arrest owners of the hospital following which police had issued a lookout notice. Police also wrote to Home Department to not allow Nayak and his wife Saswati Das, the co-owners, to flee from the country. Police Commissioner YB Khurania informed that separate raids were also conducted at Nayak’s residence and office.
Following the directives of immediate arrest by police, Nayak surrendered before police at 3.30 am after which the Khandagiri police interrogated him at an unrevealed location. Saswati is yet
to be arrested while Nayak will be produced at court today.
A huge crowd of locals has gathered outside the Khandagiri police station demanding strict action against Nayak for violating safety rules at the hospital. Meanwhile, the Special Investigation Team (SIT) that is investigating black money transactions has directed Enforcement Directorate (ED) to dig out information regarding financial dealings of Sum Hospital and Siksha O Anusandhan Charitable Trust.
