20 dead in heavy rain in Kerala, Kochi airport stops arrivals

Thiruvananthapuram: At least 20 people have been killed in landslides in Kerala due to heavy rain across the state.

Death of 11 people were reported in Idukki district, six in Malappuram, two in Kozhikode and one in Wayanad due to the heavy rain. Several people have also been reported missing in Palakkad, Wayanad and Kozhikode, according to officials.

Five members of a family lost their lives in Idukki’s Adimali town while locals and police managed to pull out two people alive from the debris.

All arrivals at the Kochi airport has been suspended both at the international and domestic terminals from this afternoon fearing flooding of the runway and all incoming flights had been diverted to other destinations till 2.30 pm, airport officials said.

Flooding has been reported in several low-lying areas in the state. Due to heavy rainfall and resultant floods, a team of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has moved to Kozhikode for rescue operations. Two more NDRF teams have been sought from centre for north Kerala.
