Hyderabad: Two people drowned and five others went missing after a boat carrying over 40 passengers capsized in Godavari river at Pasuvullanka near I. Polavaram in East Godavari district on Saturday evening.
According to sources, the boat, carrying mostly school and college students, hit a pillar of an under-construction bridge on Gautami river (a tributary of Godavari) and toppled. It was travelling from Talarivaripalem to Pashuvulanka.
Reportedly 33 people were rescued by the National Disaster Response Force and the State Disaster Response Force who were on the spot, assisting in search and rescue operations.
YSR Congress president YS Jagan Mohan Reddy has expressed grief over the loss of human lives in the boat mishap and conveyed his condolences to the bereaved family members.
It is worth mentioning here that in May 2017, 20 people died when a boat carrying 40 people capsized near Polavaram village.
