Bhubaneswar: As many as 1,895 farmers have committed suicide in last 10 years in Odisha, informed Agriculture Minister Pradeep Maharathy to the Assembly on a question of BJP member Dilip Ray on Wednesday.
Speaking in detail, Maharathy said that while 254 farmers committed suicides in 2005 in the State, the numbers of farmers dying in this manner were 283 in 2006, 240 in 2007, 260 in 2008, 154 in 2009, 162 in 2010, 144 in 2011, 146 in 2012, 150 in 2013 and 102 in 2014. The Minister gave the information based on the statistics of the NCRB covering between 2005 and 2014. Maharathy, however, said that the Government has no information on the number of suicidal deaths of farmers in the State as the NCRB has not provided any statistics on the matter.
The Minister further informed that 97 workers in farming sector committed suicide in 2014 in the State, while there was no information on the suicidal deaths of farmers for the rest years.
Maharathy informed that between 2005 and 2014, about 1, 52,264 persons committed suicide, whose main occupation was agriculture, in the 35 States and other Union Territories in India. He said that while in the last 10 years, 36,705 farmers committed suicide in Maharashtra, 12,683 farmers committed suicide in MP and 5,380 farmers committed suicide in Gujarat. He said that more farmers committed suicides in States like Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Karnataka, Kerala, MP, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, UP and West Bengal than in Odisha in 2014.
