Srinagar: As many as 13 passengers were killed while several others sustained critical injuries after a minibus, in which they were travelling skidded off the road and plunged into a 300 feet gorge in Kishtwar district of Jammu and Kashmir on Friday.
According to sources, the incident occurred when the minibus carrying around 30 passengers was headed to Kishtwar from Keshwan in the morning.
The driver of the bus lost control over wheels and skidded off the road. The vehicle fell into a 300 feet gorge, near the Chenab riverbed. Some locals who spotted the incident informed the matter to police.
A team led by Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Kishtwar Rajinder Gupta reached the spot and immediately launched a rescue operation. While the 13 persons are confirmed to be dead, the 13 others sustained critical injuries.
Meanwhile, Kishtwar Deputy Commissioner Angrez Singh Rana with the the district administration visited the spot. He informed that efforts are on to airlift eight critically-injured passengers to Jammu.
He further said, the kin of the deceased will be given an ex gratia of Rs 5 lakh each, while Rs 50,000 will be given to each of the injured persons.
