12 killed, four trapped in landslide in Gajapati; rescue on

Gajapati: As many as 12 persons including five children were killed while four others went missing in a landslide due to incessant rain triggered by cyclone Titli in Barghara village under Gangabada panchayat under Rayagada block in Gajapati district on Friday.

The deceased were identified as Dandapani Bhuyan, Sumitra Bhuyan, Somanath Kathren, Jagan Kathi, Minakshi Shabar, Gangadhara Behera, Dinesh Bhuyan, Lalu Behera, Jayachandra Bhutan, Suramati Jani and Champa Bhutan.

Four persons, who are still missing in the landslide, have been identified as Kati Bhuyan, Basanti Bhuyan, Basumati Bhuyan and Bishambara Shabara.

On being asked, Gajapati Collector Anupam Shah said, “Taking note of the report NDRF and ODRAF teams along with a medical team have been pressed in to carry out rescue operation.”

This apart, a medical team has also been sent along with the rescue team to provide necessary treatment to the affected people, Shah added.

When asked, Special Relief Commissioner Bishnupada Sethi said Gajapati SP and Collector will visit the spot today and take stock of the situation.

“Financial assistance will be provided to the deceased’s next of kin as per the government provisions, after post mortem of the bodies is completed,” said Sethi.
