Cuttack: It is after ten years that a rape survivor got justice as a court here on Monday handed down ten years of rigorous imprisonment to the convict. More than a decade after a bootlegger outraged her modesty, the rape survivor got justice as a court here on Monday handed down 10 years of rigorous imprerisnment to the convict.
The additional district and sessions Judge-III Sanjay Kumar Sahu, Monday convicted Alok Samal in the rape case and sentenced him to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment part from imposing a penalty of Rs 1 lakh on him. The court clarified that non-payment of penalty will attract an additional one year jail term.
Sources said that the convict had raped the estranged woman at Naraj under Barang police limits on false promises of marriage in 2006. Later, the woman narrated her ordeal before her brother and sister-in-law.
The convict had threatened to kill all her family members if any police complaint was lodged against him. Although the victim’s brother and sister-in-law informed the village head about the matter, no one dared to raise voice against the rapist.
Finally, the victim lofded a complaint at the Godisahi police outpost.
But instead the police officials with the victim and pressurized to withdraw her case by offering Rs 3000. Being frustrated with the behaviour of the police, victim moved the police headquarters.
Following an order from the police headquarters, Barang police had registered a case against the accused on July 29,2006. Alok had also forced the victim to terminate her seven months pregnancy. Later, police had arrested the accused and produced him in court.
The court pronounced the verdict on the basis of statements of 11 persons, police investigation reports and medical examination reports.
